A cooperative effort of 19 area chambers designed to promote local shopping.
Shop Southern Illinois is a cooperative effort of 19 chambers of commerce in Southern Illinois designed to encourage area residents to do holiday shopping in the communities in the region rather than in nearby out-of-state metropolitan areas. The program featured a website where residents could learn about the benefits of shopping locally and where they could pledge to do a majority of their holiday shopping in the region. By taking the online pledge, residents were automatically entered in weekly drawings to win prizes donated by area businesses. The program also featured a media campaign on television and radio stations throughout the region and in area newspapers. The ads, which the media ran as public service announcements free of charge, featured the popular head basketball coach from the regional university who urged area residents: "Don't cross the river and don't go online. Do your holiday shopping right here where we all win."
